Coop goes two.

it was Cooper’s second birthday yesterday. it feels like the first 2 years flew by, and now he looks like a 3 year old, and wears clothes for a 3 year old. that being said, he is so ridiculously rad, and I can’t ever spend enough time with him. we went to disneyland yesterday after school/work. I got there a little late, but right into to tag along on Cherie and his search for a new Buzz Lightyear balloon. As they were eating dinner, the balloon slipped off the string and the top and flew off. I guess Cooper was jumping all over the place to try and reach it, even though it was 20 feet in the air. So, Cherie was nice enough to go on a balloon hunt down main street to find a new one. We went to town hall and a kind person came out of the back balloon storage room with a new one for Coop. he freaked, he was so excited. then we ate ice cream. and ended up at home checking out new books, playing t-ball, and riding his new bright red bike around. I’d say it was a good day.

there’s a new Brendan Benson session up over at Daytrotter and I love it. go here to grab it. he does a couple of new ones, and a cover of “Sucked Out” by Superdrag, which after listening to it made me wanna pull all my Superdrag records again. get some.

my buddy Jonny Phillip took this picture in the backstage of one of our shows in Reno on our recent tour-cation…. it was a tour, but definitely had more of the vacation vibe. we played a casino in Reno on our second to last night of the tour, so we got a room there and lived the high life. buffets, playing the inside numbers on roulette, talking about swimming a lot, seeing movies… all that shit. it was rad. we made plans to go rafting in the river nearby, but didn’t get around to it. I gotta say, Reno was real good to us. that is, besides playing a SUPER awkward show in a casino bar.

i have no idea how this was made possible, but it’s one of those crazy things where the planets align and weirdness happens. the cramps played a mental hospital in napa in 1978.

for my final art project at school, I made a series of postcards called “Postcards from Nowhere”. the inspiration is taken from my collection of postcards. I have a ton of postcards that say “Greetings from (insert city name here)” with a handful of relevant pictures of the hotspots poking through the letters. my postcards are photos from decaying landscapes, and new urban developments that tend to look very “same-y”.

for my display at the show, I printed 250 of each postcard and put them in a spinner rack that you’d see at a convenience store. they were printed on normal postcard stock, with a traditional backing with a small quote about the photo on the front, and a place for writing / an address / the stamp. I ran out of most of the postcards, cuz I was givin ‘em away for free at the show. it’s cool to think that they might be making their way around.

i got a job

yep. it’s officially official. i’m growing up. I finished up school earlier this year at UC Irvine, studying art with an emphasis on graphic design. they don’t actually offer graphic design as a major area of studying, only a minor. but I like to think I made it my own personal emphasis. anyhow. in january my good friend g-rad scored me an internship at her work, Volcom. I started out interning with the Volcom Entertainment dudes. they run the record label over at Volcom. I got to fine tune my skills, and learn a whole bag of new ones with them. a few weeks ago, a position opened up with the art department, and I jumped on. with a lotta good references, I scored it. so now I have a job. pretty rad. it’s nice to have a feeling of stability back in my life after 8 or so years of wondering if i’m gonna be able to make my next credit card payment. now, i’ll be appreciating my weekends a little more, but having a ridiculously good time doing what I do. cool.
